What is Traditional Thai Massage?

Nuad Bo-Rarn, better known in the West as Thai Yoga massage or simply Thai massage, starts from the Eastern definition of health as a state of balance between energies and their smooth flow. This balance results from the harmony between spirit and body, which in modern society is becoming increasingly rare due to the accelerated pace of life...

... and that's why we lose conscious contact with body and mind.

Thai Yoga massage provides us not only relaxation, but also creates the benefit of experiencing a meditative state of mind and body. In such harmony, we come to exist in the present moment, which gives us a feeling of bliss on the one hand, and on the other hand the clarity we need to become aware of and relax the problems that hinder us in our daily life.

Jivaka Kumara Bhaccha, Buddha's physician who lived approximately 2,500 years ago, was the founder of this therapeutic massage and is considered the founder of traditional Thai medicine and massage. Thanks to its potential to bring the mind and body into a state of harmonious existence, Nuad Bo-Rarn has survived to this day and justified its reputation as one of the most effective, holistic therapeutic massages.

How does traditional Thai massage work?

Massage is usually performed on a mat on the floor, with the person receiving the massage lying on their back or side while the therapist uses their hands, palms, elbows and sometimes even feet to perform various techniques.

The main characteristics of traditional Thai massage include:

  1. Acupressure points: The therapist applies pressure to specific acupressure points along energy lines (known as "Sen" lines) to release blockages in the flow of energy through the body. It is believed that when energy flows freely through the body, the body is balanced and healthy.

  2. Strain: Massage involves various stretching techniques that target muscles and joints to increase flexibility, reduce tension and improve mobility.

  3. Joint mobilization: Through gentle manipulations and movements, the therapist helps mobilize the joints, which can improve circulation and reduce stiffness in the joints.

  4. Pranayama (breathing): The therapist and the person receiving the massage often use special breathing techniques to relax and focus on the therapy.
